Our Journey

Gobble Buffalo Wings, find God of Wealth, crush plates... at Car Rally

December 11, 2010: As the sun sank into the crimson Johor Straits, 30 motorists and their passengers were flagged off from Sembawang Park.

Their goal: navigate their way drive around the wilderness in the north of Singapore to search for spicy-hot chicken wings at Sunset Grill, crush plates in Kranji, locate a petrol kiosk in Upper Seletar, visit the God of Wealth in Sembawang, and remove scratches from their vehicle in Woodlands.

Armed with just a Garmin-Asus A10 navigation smartphone with prominent GPS display and their own innate sense of direction, each team has to make its ways to the five checkpoints, all part of ONE MOTORING Portal’s Sundown Car Rally, to celebrate its 10th Anniversary.

At Prospeed, a car accessories centre next to Woodlands Driving School, the participants have to get off their car and use 3M’s scratch removal cream to get rid of paint scratches around the door handles. Only when the 3M staff were satisfied with their polish job could they continue.

At Upper Seletar, the driver and the front passengers have to release their seat belts, swop places and clip on the belts again.
They were timed on how fast it was done.

Next, they were tested on how quickly they could locate the nearest petrol kiosk using the Garmin-Asus A10 navigation smartphone.

And at Kranji carpark – a devillishly difficult place to locate – there was a straight row of five paper plates laid on the road. The driver was required to drive the left wheels over the plates. Since he couldn’t see, the front and back passengers popped their heads out of the window to give him directions. This was indeed a test of steering and how good was the direction given.

Finding the carpark, at the east side of the reservoir, was itself challenging. Most teams overshot and drove over the reservoir dam to the western side. Even with a smartphone navigation system to aid them, they still required quick-thinking to get to the precise location as fast as possible.

Another checkpoint was the God of Wealth temple at Admiralty Street where the participants had to take a photo.

By 9 o’clock, all cars have returned to Sembawang Park where the participants enjoyed a sumptuous dinner with officials from the Land Transport Authority as well as ONE MOTORING portal staff and their sponsors.

There were lucky draws as well as prizes for the three top-scoring teams.
