To improve road safety, the rear and side marking requirements for long vehicles will be enhanced.

All long vehicles registered on or after 1 August 2005 have to meet the following requirements:


  • Durable rear and side markings with higher retro-reflective properties;
  • Red rear markings and yellow side markings; and
  • Three side markings fitted on each side of the long vehicle/ trailer.

With the enhanced markings, the following requirements will not be necessary from 1 August 2005:

  • "Long Vehicle" signs for all goods vehicles and trailers with overall length exceeding 13m; and
  • Flank lights for trailers.

Owners of long vehicles registered before 1 August 2005 will have up to 31 July 2007 to comply with the enhanced marking requirements.
The long vehicles that will be affected by the above requirements are:

(a) Goods vehicles with length exceeding 10 metres;
(b) Trailers with length exceeding 5 metres; and
(c) Mobile cranes with length exceeding 10 metres
(Note: Mobile cranes require fitting of rear markings only).
