Hey remember this guy?
It has been almost a month since he endured 74 hours and 59 minutes of the blistering hot sun and nights of tropical thunder storms, to outlast many others and remained the last one standing - literally. Breaking last year's record by almost 8 hours, Ian Lee, 23, had an early Christmas and took home a whole new set of wheels - the turbo-charged Subaru Imprezza WRX- at the MediaCorp Radio Subaru Impreza WRX Challenge 2004. We risked the chance of him turning schizo on us and had a chat with him to see if he has suffered any aftermath effects. So how are you going to celebrate Christmas, is it going to be your turn to be Santa Claus this time round? haha... well I always thought Rudolph stands out the most with its red nose. Yes, I've been treating my close friends to lunch or dinners because of their ardent support. What has been going on for you now after the contest? Well I don't really get recognised on the streets because I'm not a 'Singapore Idol'. I didn't join because of fame, I did this purely to challenge myself, the car came as a bonus!(seriously!), Got interviews with film-makers, psychologists and some trainers who train mind-over-matter kind of thing. So far no film offers (Hint hint..) haha.. So did you turn schizo when you were going through the ordeal? Sorry... do I know you? I understand you've just finished your national service; did you by any chance hear your army sergeant barking at you to stand still? Yes, I just finished my NS 2 months ago, did not have any hallucinations of my BMT sergeant but ya you're right... half the time, he'll be barking!
What was it that made you want to join the contest?
To finally do something different in Singapore! hahaha...no, seriously, I did it for fun at first, to challenge myself. Along the way, my determination grew stronger when other agendas start to surface, for example, my education and my brother's education fees so to lessen the burden for my parents. Any weird ideas going through your mind during the contest? Due to the extreme boredom caused by standing there and exhibiting myself holding on to a SubaruWRX, I kinda felt like an animal barricaded. haha.. nothing much
Seen any funny behaviours during the contest?
Yes definitely, voyeurism was the most interesting thing to do while standing there. An Instance... There were a few funny characters after suffering from sleep depravation. One instance would be that person didn't know that his hand was on the car and he kept asking me "what's happening...what's happening... what am I doing here?" so I had to remind him over and over again. Any conspiracy going on towards the end to share the prize? Well, to be totally honest, no. I guess its every man for himself. What do you like to do during your free-time...besides standing still and playing 'don't move that hand'? Standing under scorching SUN and Torrential Rain to either get a good TAN or to try and take a shower?? haha. I play pool, badminton, tennis swim, gym (if I have the time) and many other sports! I like cars too! I love driving... always wanted a WRX STI (not that I'm complaining)and well, thank God its here faster than expected! |
