It's a different story for the Europeans though - due to exchange rates, pricing it competitively is an almost impossible feat, and this, unfortunately, put buyers off.
The good thing about European cars is their quality. Even entry-level cars are built to a high standard. Furthermore, their better safety standards, with rigidity and a host of safety gadgetry (airbags for example) ensure that occupants are kept safe. That alone justifies its premium asking price and now, this group of buyers have another car to add into their shopping list - the Skoda Roomster. So what can set it apart? You might be hard pressed, but you can't deny the fact that the Roomster's $66k price tag is hefty, compared to the Hyundai Matrix ($56k), Mitsubishi Colt Plus ($57k) and Suzuki SX-4 ($61k). The consolation is that it's still cheaper than the Fiat Doblo's $68k asking price.
The exterior has that minivan bit but somewhat makes you take a second look - it's nicely curved and combines both cool and functionality. A stylish feature is the vertical door catch for the rear, giving off that "I-look-like-a-coupe" when viewed from the front or rear three-quarter angle. If there ever were to be a minivan with coupe-like side profile, the Roomster will be one fine example.
At 2,617mm, the Roomster has the longest wheelbase among the lot. It has the most interior space which allows flexibility as there are eight different seating configurations. This results in generous legroom for the rear passengers, ensuring that the Roomster can accommodate anyone of any height and stature. It has the second shortest width (1,684mm) but surprisingly, it has adequate shoulder room for three adults at the back.
Although some may find it bare, the Roomster has an impeccable build quality. The Roomster is made up of high quality plastic - synonymous with the Volkswagen Group. It also has that large and roomy feeling, thanks to the vast usage of glass around the car.
If you prefer fanciful interior design, the Roomster's might not appeal to you but if quality, utility and practicality are your main concerns, the Roomster's will surely impress. Performance wiseThe Roomster's powered by Volkswagen's EA111 1.6-litre engine, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission which produces 105bhp. On paper, the figures don't say much, but you'll be able to notice how it loves being stretched up the rev band until the 5,000rpm mark. Sadly after that, everything falls flat but for an urban roundabout, it's low to mid range counts more as it needs all the pick-up to keep it moving in start-stop traffic.
The tiptronic function ensures you won't be bored stiff when the sudden urge to be in full control kicks in. It has almost similar characteristic as Opel's MTA - lift your foot off the accelerator when changing gears and it will operate without any drama.
Tall gearing ensures that the engine runs below 3,000rpm at 100km/h, and this ensures good fuel economy. On the expressway, the Roomster is a refined cruiser, and the cabin is well suppressed against road noise, but wind noise intrudes past 110km/h. Handling wiseThe suspension set-up is nicely balanced between comfort and sporty handling, and its composure at speeds is respectable for a car in its class. Steering response and keen turn-ins makes it feel more hot-hatch rather than a multi-purpose vehicle. Pity the factory-shod tyre doesn't instil much justice to the Roomster's handling capabilities. It has no problems coping when chucked into corners and it does so confidently before understeering progressively. Due to the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) - everything is kept safe and neat every single time. Brakes - fitted with ABS, EBA and EBD - are one of the Roomster's best traits, as you don't need to give it a hard stomp to make it slow down or come to a complete halt.
Sum upIt's a tough fight for the Roomster at this point, unless something can be done about the pricing. But look past the asking price, the Roomster has substantial interior, unique exterior and best of all, guaranteed practicality and reliability. Driving character is another plus point, and with a list of safety gadgetry, it all adds up justly in the Roomster's favour.
