It might be overshadowed by its other German counterparts, but what the A4 can provide and the others cannot, is more driving fun - all thanks to its turbocharger and outright handling capabilities?

Just when you thought you had it all worked out, along comes a new mob of engineers, thinkers and dreamers, and the holy order of things goes right out the window. Many thought the second-generation Audi A4 is the best mid-size executive sedan ever produced by Audi. But age caught up and soon a revamp was needed. And no, a normal nip and tuck just won't do.

We all know just how stylishly proportionate the whole A4 line-up has always been. Besides talking about just the aesthetic values of the A4, the engines that come with the A4 are also worth boasting. The A4 went through metamorphosis and after each, it gets better and better.

The current Audi A4 is a laudable car - improved and entering close to the top of its class. Build quality is solid, and now, with a driving experience to match the smart aesthetics.

Love at first sight

"Subjective" is the keyword in describing the new A4's looks - some love it, while some might not. The dual grille co-ordinates well with the rest of the front assembly, and there's a suspicion that mathematics (besides blunt engineering) were used in perfecting the whole front of the A4 - everything is seemingly in place. Even the rear is distinctive - contrary to the normal square-ish assembly, the new A4 spots a futuristic-inspired tail lamp that simply looks eminent, especially when driving at night. The double exhaust tail pipes should already give an indication this IS the Turbo version.

There's just something special about this new A4 - it strikes you emotionally the first time you set your eyes on it.

Interior and accommodation

Fit and finish is definitely solid in there. The dashboard is classy and minimalist, but functional at the same time. Driver will have no problem reaching out for any controls, and another plus point to note is the availability of multi controls mounted on the steering wheel for driver's convenience. Talking about the steering wheel - although the three-spoke looks chunky initially, once your palm is used to it, you'll instantly realise that it has a really nice feel.

The fully leathered seats provide adequate lumbar support, with the rear seats having no problem welcoming even four average-sized adults at the back. As long as you're not the world's tallest person, the rear sloping roof won't get to you. Boot space is commendable - you can probably fit two golf bags in there, with space still for the clothing bag.

Driving with love

Turn the ignition on and you'll instantly hear the 1,781cc DOHC turbocharged engine comes to life with a complimenting bassy exhaust growl. The engine note at idling is rather charismatic - tapping on the accelerator and seeing the tachometer needle rise is akin to keying in the ATM's keypad on payday - it just excites you.

There's also a marked improvement to the A4's transmission. While its predecessor has a 6-speeder, this version comes with a 7-speeder. The extra gear definitely helps - the shifts are now done more smoothly in either "D" or manual-shifting mode.

The A4's chassis feels at home even when shown twisty roads or deep corners. It gives the driver a high level of confidence at leaving the crowd behind and impressing them at the same time. With the assistance of ESP, understeer is constantly kept in check. Steering has pin-point accuracy, and unlike the previous A4, has a better steering feel.

Verdict

The third generation Audi A4 is an excellent all-rounder, and suits almost anyone. It is a stylishly universal car that won't feel odd when parked at nightspots, golf courses or even the shopping mall. If you're looking for something stylishly outstanding yet subtle, powerful but refined and impressive as a whole, this is the car for you.

But if you're the "follow-the-crowd" sort, look elsewhere.
