Though not the quickest car around, the refreshed Subaru Forester 2.0X (A) is a competent and efficient SUV that handles well, given its new third-generation powerplant, the FB 20. New Boxer engineInstead of improving on its renowned second-generation flat-four Boxer engine, Subaru decided to give it an entirely new identity that will keep pace with the stricter fuel-economy and emissions standards on the horizon; hence the change of its codename from EJ to FB. The FB powerplant has a 15mm longer stroke and an 8mm smaller bore compared to the old EJ. The increased stroke improves fuel efficiency, low- to mid-range torque and emissions, which means that drivability and performance are enhanced. The old chain-type cam drive has been replaced by a timing belt, which translates into a maintenance-free setup and which helps to keep the width of the engine to a minimum. Subaru has also incorporated in the new flat-four motor, lighter pistons and connecting rods, a higher compression ratio (10.5:1 versus 10.2:1), a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust sides.
Good handlingThat said, how does the car handle on the road? Acceleration from standstill and at full throttle takes 12.9 seconds to reach 100kmh, so even if it is not the fastest car around, it does deliver decent acceleration. The engine feels more refined and smooth when climbing the rev ladder, but takes a bit of effort getting it up to speed.Given its height, there is some body roll when cornering and the ride does turn uncomfortable when the car is running over tough bumps. It does come into its own however, when you compare its handling to others in the same class. Like all Subarus, the Forester comes with a symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD) system, which means it corners well and without fuss, and there is plenty of traction even in slippery, stormy weather conditions. You can therefore depend on it to excel when the car is taken off the road onto more rugged terrain. With its high ground clearance and AWD that give it plenty of grip, the Forester makes for an impressive off-roader. The ExteriorThere is really not much to be said about the new 2011 Subaru Forester on the outside, as it looks basically the same as the old version, except for a revised grille that has more chrome. It remains a conservative and pleasant-looking, tall SUV that will appeal to those who prefer less flashy cars. Roomy cabin for the familyThe interior is well-designed, with well-placed controls within reach. There are even blue-tooth connectivity and steering-wheel controls for the audio system (which by the way, sounds very well balanced), and USB and aux input ports for iPod or MP3 player. What is immediately apparent is that there is an abundance of headroom and legroom for the driver and passengers. On the negative side, the dashboard is dominated by hard plastics and the interior looks a little dated, which could do with a more modern facelift. But if that is not important to you, you will find all in all, that it is a comfortable and roomy station wagon for the family.
