In the event of a road accident, here are some steps you can follow.
- Do not panic and keep calm. A cool head will allow you to assess the situation.
- Give first aid to the injured if you are trained or can render help in any way without exposing yourself to any danger.
- Switch on your hazard lights and place the standard triangular warning sign at least 20 metres behind your vehicle. Find a safe spot away from the vehicle to wait for help.
- Call the police if there is an injured party or the accident involves a foreign vehicle, a pedestrian or cyclist.
- Move the vehicle to the side of the road if it is a non-injury accident.
- For insurance claims, note down the other party's contacts, car registration number and insurance company. Also note down an independent witness's particulars if there is one. If you have a camera on hand, take pictures of the damage.
- Make a report to your insurance company as soon as possible. For non-injury accidents when the police are not called, you need only lodge a Non-Injury Motor Accidents Report Form with your insurance company.
