While changing a tyre isn't as difficult as some people think, it is important to observe safety while we do so.
Ensure these essential items are in your car
  • A Jack
  • A properly inflated spare tyre
(Check air pressure in the temporary or full-size spare tyre at least once a month)
  • A lug wrench that fits your wheel
  • Lug bolts

1) Park the car at a safe location. If you get a flat tyre while driving, pull off to the left as far as possible.

2) Put the car in park (for auto) / in gear (for manual transmission)

3) Place the triangular breakdown sign at least 20m behind your vehicle and raise your hood.

4) Take out the spare tyre, jack, lug wrench, and related items from your boot.

5) Anchor the wheel. If possible, put blocks in front of and behind the tyre diagonally across from the wheel you are changing.

6) Remove the wheel cover, if necessary. Do this with the end of the jack handle or screwdriver. Using the wrench, loosen the lug nuts one full turn, but do not remove them.
7) Position the jack, as per your vehicle owner's manual. Rest it on a solid surface, with base flat on the ground.

8) Lift the car with the jack until the wheel you need to change is about 2 - 3 inches off the ground. Do not lie under the car while it is on a jack.

9) Remove lug nuts. When done, remove the flat tyre and roll it away.

10) Position the spare tyre. Tighten the lug nuts by hand so that the wheel is securely attached to the bolts. Be careful not to jerk or shake the car.

11) Lower the car until the tyre contacts the ground, anchoring the tyre. Tighten the lug nuts with the wrench until they are evenly tightened. Work diagonally i.e. tighten one on top, then on bottom, then one on the left and so on. Finally, lower the car completely and give the lug nuts a final tightening.

12) Get the damaged tyre replaced or properly repaired as soon as possible at a tyre shop to ensure that you always have a functional spare tyre on hand. Also, some cars come with a compact spare tyre. As this kind of tyre is for temporary use only, it should be removed as soon as the original tyre can be repaired or replaced. You should also not drive beyond the speed limit as specified by the car manufacturer when using the compact tyre.
