The Land Transport Authority has opened a new 2-lane flyover - the Kallang Way Flyover on Sunday, 20 August 2006. The Kallang Way Flyover is one of the three flyovers constructed under the Kallang Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) project Contract 422. It is located at the interchange between the Pan-Island Expressway and the future KPE.
"With the opening of the Kallang Way Flyover, motorists travelling on the PIE (Changi), heading towards Sims Avenue, Guillemard Road, Mountbatten Road and Nicoll Highway areas can make use of the flyover to get to Sims Way. I'm sure many motorists who make daily trips to these areas would look forward to using it," said Mr Marcus Karakashian, Director, Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway. Motorists could expect to save about 15 to 20 mins (during peak hours) and 10 mins (during off-peak hours) by avoiding four traffic junctions along Kallang Way, Aljunied Road and Lorong 22 Geylang if they go by Kallang Way Flyover to get to the Sims Avenue, Guillemard Road, Mountbatten Road and Nicoll Highway areas. On 11 September 2005, the Land Transport Authority opened the Kallang Bahru Flyover and permanently closed the Aljunied slip road that connected to PIE (Tuas). Motorists who used to be caught in the daily peak hour traffic jam along Aljunied Road and the Aljunied slip road into PIE (Tuas) have since been enjoying a smoother and more convenient access to PIE (Tuas) via the Kallang Bahru Flyover at Sims Way. The third flyover at the KPE/PIE interchange is the Aljunied West Flyover. This flyover was opened on 26 Oct 2007. Please refer to the attached location map showing the final traffic scheme at the KPE/PIE interchange. The KPE is a 12-km expressway that stretches from East Coast Parkway (ECP) to Tampines Expressway (TPE). Nine kilometres of the expressway is constructed as an underground tunnel.
