The extension of Bartley Road to Tampines Avenue 10 provides a vital link from the Tampines Regional Centre and Bedok New Town to the central region via Bartley Road and Braddell Road. This direct central-east connection will also help to relieve traffic congestion along the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) and Bedok Reservoir Road.

The project is carried out in two phases:

  • Phase 1 extends Tampines Avenue 10 to meet Airport Road. A section of Phase 1 -- the road extension connecting Tampines Avenue 10 and Kaki Bukit Avenue 4 -- is completed and has been opened to traffic since 30 December 2003.

  • Phase 2 involves the extension of Bartley Road to Airport Road. The contract was awarded in February 2007 and works have commenced on 1 March 2007. This phase involves the building of a 1.9km viaduct that spans across Airport Road, Hougang Avenue 3 and Upper Paya Lebar Road and joins Bartley Road near Outram Institute.

Features

The completed road project will bring about these new features:

  • Kaki Bukit Industrial Area is connected to Tampines Avenue 10 by a 2.1km long, dual 3-lane viaduct that extends across the Tampines Avenue 10/Bedok North Road junction.

  • Bartley Road will be extended by a 1.9km viaduct that spans across Airport Road, Hougang Avenue 3 and Upper Paya Lebar Road.

Upper Paya Lebar Underpass Opens To Traffic

As part of the Bartley Road extension project, a vehicular underpass was built along Upper Paya Lebar Road and opened to traffic on 8 March 2009.

The newly completed dual-two lane underpass allows motorist to bypass the junction of Bartley Road and Upper Paya Lebar Road as they travel towards Airport Road or Lorong Ah Soo.
With the opening of the underpass, the existing Upper Paya Lebar Road will be realigned, so that the junction of Upper Paya Lebar Road and Bartley Road will be relocated southwards directly above the underpass. The reconfigured traffic junction will facilitate better traffic flow for vehicles coming from both Upper Paya Lebar and Bartley Road.

Two new pedestrian overhead bridges have also been constructed along Bartley Road and Upper Paya Lebar Road as part of this project to facilitate pedestrian crossing.

At the relocated Bartley Road/Upper Paya Lebar Road junction, the underpass will form a three-tier road interchange with the Bartley Road Extension viaduct which is still under construction.

Benefits

The extension of Bartley Road to Tampines Avenue 10 directly links the central and eastern regions. So whether you are going from Tampines to Bishan, or from Toa Payoh to Pasir Ris, you will enjoy a shorter travelling time.

This project is expected to be completed by the 3rd quarter of 2009. When the road extension is completed, motorists can also bypass PIE, which they currently use as a route to travel between the two parts of the island. This will help to relieve heavy traffic volume along PIE near Bedok Reservoir Road and Eunos.
