The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has opened a temporary vehicular viaduct along Cross Street, from Central Boulevard to Club Street in 2008. The viaduct serves to minimize the impact of DTL 1 construction works on traffic along Cross Street, which forms part of the Downtown Line (DTL) construction corridor. It also allows part of the road to be used for construction of the Downtown Line MRT tunnel.
Motorists can access the viaduct via the up-ramps at Central Boulevard, Raffles Quay (beside Hong Leong Building) and Robinson Road (beside City House Building). The viaduct carries traffic to the Cross Street junction with South Bridge Road, by-passing the four busy traffic junctions at Raffles Quay, Robinson Road, Cecil Street and Telok Ayer Street and thus relieving traffic travelling at-grade. As the viaduct serves principally to alleviate potential traffic congestion during the course of DTL construction works along Cross Street, the viaduct will be removed and roads reinstated upon the completion of the Cross Street Station in 2012. Location of the viaduct and up-ramps Safety MeasuresFor safety reasons, motorists using the viaduct are to observe the following restrictions:
Vehicles exceeding the maximum weight and height limits as stated above, and motorcycles are not allowed to access the viaduct.
Access to China StreetMotorists have two options to access China Street:
i) Via the at-grade road along Pickering Street. ii) Via the at-grade road along Cross Street. Motorists are advised to keep to the right outer-most lane after Cheng Wan Seng Place. Driving directions to access China Street Access to Club StreetMotorists have four options to access Club Street:
i) Via the viaduct from Central Boulevard, Raffles Quay or Robinson Road ii) Via the at-grade road along Gemmill Lane from Amoy Street (cars only) iii) Via Erskine Road from South Bridge Road iv) Via Kadayanallur Street from Maxwell Road During this period, motorists are advised to be vigilant to the directional signages put up along Cross Street. LTA will continue to monitor the traffic and construction situation at Cross Street and will work closely with relevant agencies to ensure minimal inconvenience to motorists and the public.
