LTA will be upgrading the roads system leading to the Sentosa and HarbourFront area to meet the demand of the anticipated growth in traffic in the area when the Resorts World at Sentosa has its soft opening in first quarter of 2010 as well as future developments in the area.
The upgrading works will ensure that the road network in the vicinity of the Sentosa-HarbourFront area, which includes Telok Blangah Road and Kampong Bahru Road, will have the capacity to cope with the anticipated increase in traffic volume.
The improvement works are expected to improve traffic capacity of the road network in this area by about 30%.
LTA have assessed the traffic situation along the road network and have been working closely with traffic consultants from Resorts World at Sentosa to ensure that the improvements to the road network will be able to meet the increased traffic volumes as a result of the new integrated resort.
The scope of the improvements works includes:
- Widening of Sentosa Gateway and stretches of Telok Blangah Road and Kampong Bahru Road by a single lane in both directions.
- Converting the existing central up-ramp which links Telok Blangah Road (near Henderson Road) to the West Coast Highway (city bound) viaduct to a down-ramp which will link West Coast Highway (west bound) to Telok Blangah Road.
- Construction of a new up-ramp which will link Telok Blangah Road to the West Coast Highway viaduct (city bound).
The project has commenced in June 2008 and it is expected to be completed by January 2010.
Construction of new up-ramp and the conversion of existing up-ramp to down-ramp
Apart from road widening works, the upgrading works will include the construction of a new ramp to the existing West Coast Highway viaduct and the conversion of the existing central up-ramp to the West Coast Highway to a down-ramp.
The new up-ramp to West Coast Highway viaduct at Telok Blangah Road between Wishart Road and Seah Im Road was opened to traffic on 6 November 2009. It provides entry for traffic coming from Henderson Road, Alexandra Road and Pasir Panjang Road onto the West Coast Highway viaduct heading eastwards towards the city without having to contribute to traffic on the Telok Blangah Road.
The conversion of up-ramp to down-ramp to West Coast Highway viaduct at Telok Blangah Road between Wishart Road and Seah Im Road was completed and opened to traffic on 17 December 2009. With this opening, the traffic from Keppel Road (Pasir Panjang bound) heading to Henderson Road need not go through the busy junctions along Telok Blangah Road at Kampong Bahru Road and Sentosa Gateway.
