Motorists will soon be seeing more Intelligent Road Studs (IRS) on road junctions. This initiative is part of LTA's effort to enhance safety for both motorists and pedestrians.

In October 2005, LTA installed IRS and/or "Give Way to Pedestrian" advisory signs at three signalised junctions in Toa Payoh. This was part of a three-month trial to gauge the public's reaction to the use of IRS on the roads. During the trial, LTA sought the public's feedback through on-site surveys and via LTA's online consultation portal Talk2LTA (http://talk2lta.lta.gov.sg). A total of 382 respondents comprising motorists and pedestrians gave their feedback. The majority of them viewed IRS favourably. 69% of them were of the opinion that the junctions with IRS are safer for pedestrians and motorists than junctions without. 81% of the respondents agreed that IRS has enhanced safety for the elderly, less mobile and the children.

Following the success of the trial at Toa Payoh, LTA has decided to extend IRS to 15 more locations (refer to the list of locations below). These locations were selected based on the following criteria.

Firstly, right-turning motorists failing to give way to pedestrians are common at these locations. Secondly, at least two accidents involving right-turn motorists and the pedestrians have occurred at the locations over the past three years. Lastly, pedestrian flow is substantial over a considerable length of the day as the locations are near MRT stations, bus interchanges, markets and food centres.

The IRS is scheduled to be implemented at the 15 locations by the middle of 2007.
