Getting to the Other Side Safely
In Singapore, a number of pedestrian crossings are in operation. Find out how you, as a pedestrian, can help to make our road safer.
Traffic Lights
Why do I need to push the button to activate the 'green man' signal?
|
|
By pushing the button, you are telling the system that you are waiting to cross the road. Traffic will then be stopped to allow this. You can proceed to cross the road when the 'green man' comes on.
|
Some traffic lights are equipped with countdown timers. These timers may be located beside the 'red' and 'green man' signals, or integrated within the 'red man' signal. They show the amount of time left for you to cross. You should not cross when the 'green man' is flashing, as you will not be able to complete the crossing.
Zebra Crossings
Drivers must slow down and be prepared to stop when a pedestrian steps onto a pedestrian crossing. However, not all vehicles will stop for you, so wait until the vehicle has stopped BEFORE you start to cross.
Pedestrian Overhead Bridges and Under Passes
The pedestrian overhead bridges and pedestrian under passes are built so that pedestrians can cross safely without affecting the traffic flow.
Dividers
Dividers are installed on certain segments of a road. The divider helps you to cross the road in two stages. You only need to concentrate on one-way traffic at any one time. However, you must still take extra care and wait for a safe traffic gap before crossing.
How Can You Play a Part?
Before crossing the road- Do not rush. Look out for traffic in all directions as drivers do not always stop when they should
- Do not stand in between parked vehicles/in front of stationary buses/big vehicles as the drivers may not see you
When crossing the road- Be attentive. Look out for vehicles. Avoid using gadgets such as handphones and mp3 players
- Young children should always be accompanied by adults
- Be considerate. Cross as soon as you can safely
If you see any misuse of road facilities, or if any facility needs repair, you can call us at LTA Customer Service Line at 1800-CALL LTA (1800-2255 582) to report.
