NEW SENTOSA GATEWAY TUNNEL

The Sentosa Gateway Tunnel (SGT) is a one way tunnel for vehicles leaving Sentosa to Lower Delta Road or Keppel Road.

Concurrently with the tunnel construction, the LTA will be widening Lower Delta Road from two lanes to three lanes in both directions between Kampong Bahru Road and AYE. In addition, the LTA will upgrade the Lower Delta Flyover to allow motorists from Lower Delta Road (north bound) to connect directly to the AYE (city bound).

The Sentosa Gateway Tunnel (SGT) is currently undergoing testing and commissioning works in preparation for the tunnel opening.

Tunnel Opening Announcement

The Sentosa Gateway Tunnel (SGT) will open on 27 April 2017 (Thursday), 10am. Please refer to the brochure for more information.

Location Map for Sentosa Gateway Tunnel

The Sentosa Gateway Tunnel, is a one-way road tunnel that connects outbound traffic from Sentosa Island directly to Lower Delta Road and Keppel Road. It will help alleviate the current congestion experienced at the busy at-grade traffic junctions at Sentosa Gateway, Telok Blangah Road, Kampong Bahru Road and Lower Delta Road, especially during evening peak hours and the weekends.

As the Sentosa Gateway Tunnel had to be constructed close to the North East Line MRT tunnels and the West Coast Highway viaduct foundations, it was designed with a height constraint of 3.5m. In view of the height constraint, and for fire safety reasons, only cars and motorcycles* are permitted to use the Sentosa Gateway Tunnel. Buses and goods vehicles can continue using the existing at-grade roads towards Telok Blangah Road to reach their destinations.

Warning signs and height restriction beams will be installed to prevent buses and goods vehicles from entering the Sentosa Gateway Tunnel. LTA will carry out a series of engagement activities including briefings and sending direct mailers to stakeholders before the tunnel opens.

Motorists are advised to plan their routes in advance and follow the traffic signs within and outside of the tunnel to help them navigate to their destinations.

*Motorcycles are restricted from entering Sentosa as per Sentosa Development Corporation’s policy. Exceptions are made for authorised courier services as well as residents, who are permitted to travel only between their residence and the mainland.

Key Project Challenge

The project is located within a heavily built-up area, with a very tight construction corridor where the existing North-East Line (NEL) tunnels are just about 1.6m below

Besides ensuring that the NEL and viaduct are not affected by ground movement during construction, the team also has to contend with the busy traffic along Telok Blangah Road and Kampong Bahru Road and the many utilities beneath these roads. To prevent extensive road diversions and traffic disruptions, LTA deployed a piped-box tunnelling method to build the tunnel, instead of the conventional cut-and-cover method.

As this method is being deployed for the first time and coupled with difficult ground conditions (mix of both hard rocks and soft soil), the construction for the piped box tunnel (comprising a two-lane piped box tunnel under Telok Blangah Road and one-lane piped box tunnel under Kampong Bahru Road) was planned and carried out sequentially to ensure that excavation for the box tunnel is carried out safely and in a controlled manner.
