For identification purposes, every vehicle in Singapore must have a Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) displayed on the vehicle’s front and back plates.

Understanding VRN

Every vehicle in Singapore must have a VRN displayed on the vehicle number plates.

 

When buying a new vehicle, you can choose to use a VRN automatically assign by LTA, or a bid/retained VRN of your choice.

 

There is no charge for a VRN automatically assigned by LTA.

 

If you want to use a VRN of your choice, you must bid for it before registering your new vehicle.

 

Alternatively, you can bid for a VRN and pay a fee to replace the VRN for your vehicle that is already registered.

 

You can also choose to retain the VRN of your existing vehicle and assign it to your new vehicle.

Bidding for a VRN

You can bid for your preferred VRN from the pool of available numbers. Follow these steps:

  1. Check if your preferred VRN is available
  2. Submit the bid online during the main bidding exercise or weekly bidding exercise
  3. Check your bid results. Your bidding results will be emailed to you, or you can check it online
  4. Use your VRN

If your bid is unsuccessful, your bid amount will be refunded.

Understanding VRN


Your VRN must be displayed on the front and back plates of your vehicle. Before you buy a new vehicle, first decide if you want to use a VRN automatically assigned by LTA, or a VRN of your choice.

If you would like a VRN of your choice, bid for your preferred VRN before buying a new vehicle.

You can also retain your VRN from an existing vehicle and assign it to your new vehicle.

If you did not bid for a preferred VRN or assign the VRN from your existing vehicle to your new vehicle, LTA will automatically assign you a VRN from the current VRN Allocation Pool when your motor dealer registers your vehicle. Once your vehicle has received the auto-assigned VRN, you will need to pay a fee of $321 to replace it.

Announcement Shout-out

 You cannot keep or use the vehicle without displaying the correct VRN assigned to the vehicle. You must also seal the vehicle number plates (if applicable) by the stipulated deadline. Otherwise, you will face a fine of up to $2,000 or imprisonment up to 6 months.

 

Bidding for a new VRN


You can bid for an available VRN with the prefix and suffix (e.g. SLPxxxxA) during the bidding exercises based on your vehicle type.

Each bid allows you to choose up to 3 different combinations of numbers for the same prefix (e.g. SLPxxxxA, SLPyyyyB, SLPzzzzC). If your bid is successful, only 1 VRN will be awarded based on the order of preference you submitted in your bid. If you wish to acquire more than one VRN, you must make more than 1 bid.

Bidding for VRN for goods vehicles

 

Step 2: Submit your bid 

Once you have decided on your preferred VRN, you can submit your bid online during the bidding exercises. The minimum bid amount is $1,000. The bid amount must be in multiples of $1. Once you submit your bid, you cannot amend or withdraw it.

To submit online, you will need the following:

  • Your preferred VRN (in order of preference)
  • The NRIC No./FIN/Company/Business/Association Registration Cert. No. of the vehicle's intended registered owner
  • Email address for notification of results and e-receipt
  • Contact number
  • A valid Internet Banking account with Citibank, DBS/POSB, OCBC/Plus!, Standard Chartered Bank or UOB (eNETS Debit) with adequate balance and Payment Limit for your payment amount. You can also choose to pay your bid with a Cashier’s Order (see instructions below) for total payments above a total of $50,000.
  • A non-refundable $10.70 service fee, paid via eNETS Debit, for each bid submission
  • Bank account details for refund of unsuccessful bids paid by eNETS Debit
  • If paying by Cashier’s Order, choose how you want to receive your refund if your bid is unsuccessful.  Fill in your mailing address to receive it by mail, or the name and NRIC No. of the person to collect the refund at the LTA Customer Service Centre at 10 Sin Ming Drive Singapore 575701

Instructions for payment by Cashier’s Order

Main bidding exercise

When a new VRN series (with numbers from 1 to 9999) is launched, it will be announced online and via fax to motor dealers. The exercise starts on a Friday and ends the following Wednesday. You can submit your bid online during the following hours:

  • 1.00 am, Friday to 4.30 pm, Wednesday
  • Available all day during this period except midnight to 1.00 am daily


Weekly bidding exercise

You can bid for the remaining VRNs left over from the main bidding exercise. The exercise starts on a Friday and ends the following Monday.

You can submit your bid online during the following hours:

  • 1.00 am, Friday to 4.30 pm, Monday
  • Available all day during this period except midnight to 1.00 am

Step 3: Check your bid results

LTA will notify you of your bidding results via email using the address you submitted. You can also check your results online.

Results for the main bidding exercise are announced on the following Wednesday at 12pm, 1 week after the bidding exercise closes, unless otherwise stated by LTA.

Results for the weekly bidding exercise are announced on the Wednesday at 12pm the same week the bidding exercise closes, unless otherwise stated by LTA.


Step 4: Using your VRN

The VRN is valid for 1 year, starting from 12pm on the day after the bidding results are announced. You cannot transfer the VRN. The VRN cannot be cancelled and the bid will not be refunded as well. There are 2 ways to use the VRN:

  1. Ask the motor dealer to use the VRN immediately when you register a new vehicle.
  2. Replace the VRN on your existing vehicle any time within a year at LTA Customer Service Centre, (10 Sin Ming Drive, Level 1), anytime from Monday to Friday between 8am and 4pm.

Please bring the following:

  • Completed application form (R06)
  • Confirmation email for the VRN you won the bid for
  • Replacement fee of $321 to replace the VRN

Once you have replaced the VRN, you must change the number plates within 3 calendar days.

If the VRN is still unused by the expiry date, the VRN will be reassigned back to LTA. 

You can apply for a 6-month extension of the unused VRN before the expiry date. It will cost $1,000 plus an administration fee of $32.10 for each 6-month extension.

If your bid is unsuccessful 

Your bid amount will be refunded if it is unsuccessful.

Bid submitted using eNETS Debit

If you paid by eNETS Debit, you will receive your refund through the Interbank GIRO account you indicated in your bid submission. If the transaction fails, you will receive a cheque by post.

Bid submitted using Cashier’s Order

If you paid by Cashier's Order, your bid envelope containing your Cashier’s Order will be returned to you according to your preference stated in your online submission.

You can opt to receive the refund by mail or collect it at the LTA Customer Service Centre.

  • Receive refund by mail
    LTA mails out the bid envelopes of unsuccessful bids containing the refund the day the bidding results are released. LTA is not liable for any damage to or the loss of the returned envelope via post.  
  • Collect refund at LTA Customer Service Centre
    The bid envelopes of unsuccessful bids containing the refund can be collected at the LTA Customer Service Centre at 10 Sin Ming Drive Singapore 575701 from the day the bidding results are released. You would have earlier indicated the person collecting the bid envelope when you submitted your bid online.

If the bidding exercise is over for more than 2 months, you must make an appointment to collect the bid envelope. Call 1800-2255-582 to make an appointment.
